4,109 seats in the 28 State Assemblies.

Of the votes polled, 186 were in favour of the bill and only one was against.

The first attempt to get the Women's foggy Sunday morning, I went to witness the razzle dazzle of the 7th Edition of Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2010. I have never visited this event earlier. The razzle dazzle of this event prompted me to skip my usual Sunday morning laze.

The eternal flame brought from Marathon in Greece and the inclusion of about 5.6 kms stretch of the architectural marvel - the Bandra Worli Sea Link were the main highlights of this year's edition.

This year's Marathon had more runners, but what I heard from others, the Dream Run was a bit less carnival compared to the previous editions. This came as a surprise to me since I found it quite entertaining. Might be, the previous editions would have been more extravagant.

Though the Bandra-Worli Sea Link was the highlight of the race, it turned out to be quite a killer. The race officials did a major blunder. There wasn't a single water station on the 5.6 kms stretch of Bandra Worli Sea Link leaving the runners thirsty. It definitely affected their run. Because of the direct sun falling on them, it was hot and humid and there was no wind. "It was like running in a desert," said actor Milind Soman. And now there is some news - the sea link toll agency plans to claim Rs. 5 lakh from the state for losses during the closure period.

The 27 year old Kenyan farmer Denis Ndiso clinched the men's event clocking 2:12:34. The youth was asked to vacate his room to accommodate his grandmother and shift to another room. This angered him as he was denied his daily staple or porn and horror films of which he had a habit of watching them on his computer. His grandmother had also scolded him in front of guests. The youth murdered his grandmother.

There may be innumerable instances of this kind.

The characters depicted on the television, especially the violent ones, have great impact on the children's behaviour.

Use of abusive words, committing violent acts and being aggressive are the reactions of the cartoons on children.

Dr. Aric Sigman, an associate fellow of British Psychological Society, said spending hours in front of the small screen was "the greatest unacknowledged health threat of our time".

According to him, excess television view can cause following health hazards-

1. Increased risk of obesity and heart disease from higher cholesterol, which is caused by the lack of exercise. Children can be vulnerable to type 2 diabetes from eating high-calorie food while watching television.

2. It can upset sleep patterns.

3. The light from the television set can suppress the key hormone melatonin, raising the risk of cell DNA mutations, which can lead to cancer.

4. Because of lower melatonin levels linked to TV exposure, girls are reaching puberty much earlier (premature puberty).

5. Poor concentration.

6. Watching television at a stretch may damage your eyes and cause several focal problems.

7. Poor educational achievement.

A study published in the May 2007 issue of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine says that frequent TV viewing during adolescence could increase the risk of attention and learning difficulties.

Thus censorship on the content of these shows is very much essential.

Give your children your time and attention. Be with them. Presence is more than just being there. Communication with your children is very important. Let your children understand what is correct and what is wrong; what is good and what is evil.

The parents definitely need to keep the remote in control.

Good Money Habits in Children

There are some things money can't buy, but there are many other things we need to buy and we need money to buy it. Money may not be everything, but money is something really important.

Teaching children good money habits have life-long benefits and it’s worth the effort.

Where do most parents go wrong?

Most working parents find difficult to spend much needed time with them. To compensate for this, they shower their children with gifts. Providing whatever and whenever they demand does affect the children’s lacking the importance of value of money.

Children should not be pampered to the extent of being spoiled. When children grow up without hearing “no” for their demand, one cannot expect to understand the value of money when they are in teens and start to rebel.

Parents are children's role model -

Children learn about money from observing their parents. Parents are children's role model and they study their every move including the way they spend money. Parents should set the right example as children interpret your financial actions.

Value of Money -

It is important that kids learn the value of money. They should know that money is product of struggle. They have to work really hard to earn money. Parents should inculcate the value of money and let them know how it is used in everyday life.

If the kids really want something, ask them to do some jobs around the house and reward them with the pocket money to buy it. This will help them to understand the value of money.

Parents should make them understand the importance of saving for its use in future. Saving money in "piggy" or coin banks can help children learn how to plan and also develop their patience.

“The art is not in making money, but in keeping it."
<img width='1' height='1' They have been often the targets of conflict. Also their participation during post-war reconstruction cannot be sidelined.

Women are devoted to peace and fighting battles with the enemy is generally the duty of the men.

In the legendary account of Indian history, before the start of war, women participated by providing supplies, outfitting their husbands for battle, singing in their support and sending the warriors off with prayers for a safe return. Participation of women during wars meant bringing water for the soldiers and tending the wounded. When the victorious war party returned from the battlefield, women danced during the celebration.

In some cases, girls were encouraged to develop their riding and fighting skills. In some exceptional cases stronger willed women actually became outstanding warriors. Tribal legends give accounts of brave women who were cunning in strategy and skilled in archery and horsemanship.

Many ancient histories speak of the women who took part in the wars.
Indian history has highlighted many women's role during wars. The woman that deserves a mention is Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi. She died fighting British troops during the uprising of 1857.

During World War II, woman wrote letters to their husbands, brothers and friends and boosted their morale.

There are many other names of women who have showed their courage and bravery during wars. Some others may have missed their mention in the books of history.
Though there may be several accounts of heroic deeds of women during war, many women were subject to atrocities.

Rape was always regarded as a by-product of war. Even small girls and infants were not spared.
Atrocities during World War - II against women reached its new peak. Both before and during World War II, thousands of female sex slaves were forced to deliver sexual services. These women were called “comfort women” or “military sex slaves”. Abducted females, as young as eleven years old, were imprisoned in military camps known as "comfort stations" and raped. These “comfort women” were forced to service as many as fifty soldiers a day. They were often beaten and starved. They were simply discarded when they got too sick to be of any use.

Most of these comfort women could not bear children or tell their loves ones of their forced prostitution in the comfort stations. One woman's husband did find out about her past and told her - “Better to have a left over dog, then a left over person.” He then left for another woman.
The testimonies of ex-soldiers explained how they were encouraged to go to comfort stations. One exclaimed, “We were told we could do what we want to do, so we raped in the battlefield in enemy zone.” Another ex-soldier stated a story of raping a woman who had smeared feces to deter him of rape. He raped her nonetheless.

There are other innumerable instances of violence against women all around the globe - both during and post-war.

Violence against women is now no longer tolerated. United Nations has set up international law that considers violence against women a crime against humanity. However, the law alone will not stop the violence. Internationally and locally, we all must demand peace as our right.
Women are the most sufferers of the atrocities resulting due to war. Indeed, War is the science of destruction.

“Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind.”- John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

Mistakes Parents Often Make

Here are the most common mistakes parents make while handling their children.

Giving up to demands of children -
Bonding with children is an important aspect. To enhance bonding, parents try to give their best for them. They do not want to upset their children. They shower their children with gifts. This is more common amongst working parents. Working parents feel the guilt of not spending much time with their kids and easily succumb to their unreasonable demands so as to compensate for the time not spared with them. But by doing so, they do more harm than good. Such children turn self-centered and selfish. Parents realize their mistake when the demands made do not fit their budget and they are unable to fulfill them.
It is important to say "no" and be firm.
Children should learn the value of money. Let them know that money is a product of struggle and hard work.

Giving decisive powers -
Though opinion of children should be asked and respected, it should not cross a limit. If you disagree with their particular choice or opinion, then say it is not good for them. Do not try to reason or enter into a debate.

Abusing or criticizing -
Some parents often criticize their children.
Never tease children. Never call them with names such as "ugly", "stupid", "lazy".
Criticism is more dangerous when done in front of others. It makes child feel ridiculed and hence affects his or her confidence.
It is important to point out the bad behaviour in children. But this behaviour should be reprimanded, not children.
Children should be allowed to grow and learn through mistakes.

Expectations -
Most parents are not satisfied with their children's accomplishments.
It is important for parents to keep their egoistic expectations aside. These expectations are destructive not only to the parents but their kids as well.
Children should be encouraged to succeed. But if encouragement turns to pressure, they become anxious and start under-performing. It may also lower their confidence.
Parents must not burden children with unrealistic aspirations. Children should have their own dreams and parents should help fulfill them.

Defending when reprimanded -
It is also very commonly seen that parents defend their children who have been reprimanded. When reprimanded, their ego is hurt. Instead of correcting their children, they are angered and challenge the person who has pointed their mistake.

Parental fights -
Disagreements are common in marriage. But children should not be made spectators to parental quarrels and arguments. They are exposed to your aggressive behaviour. Quarreling in front of children lowers self-esteem and they feel insecure.

Mistakes are bound to happen in life. But if you learn from mistakes, it will help you be a better person.

Loving Your Kids

This article deals with the ways and means of enhancing bonding with your kids.
“To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart.”

This quote by Donald Laird is truer while handling kids. Handling kids by bestowing love helps in developing a good relationship between parents and their kids. Everyone loves his or her child. No one can deny this. It is but natural.

Even a person, who brings a pet at home, after spending a few hours, develops a relationship with the animal and treats it as just as another member of the family. Then this is his child - his own child.

Love is a two-way process. You shower love on your kids and you receive love in return from them and also earn respect.

Bonding with your child is one of the important means to show you love your kid. Proper bonding develops a positive relationship between parent and a child.
It is important to stay bonded with your child right from their childhood till later.

This bonding can be enhanced by-

Communication:
Communication with your child is vital. Have open communications with him. Allow him to ask questions.
“He who asks a question may be a fool for five minutes, but he who never asks a question, remains a fool forever.”
Tom Connelly

Answer questions honestly. When you talk, speak only what you know. When in doubt, say - “that is a good question. It has to be confirmed or looked into.” Learn about what you don't know. Try to answer unanswered queries by involving the child.

Spare Time:
When your child needs you, give him time. Children want your attention. Take time out of your work to be with them. Presence is more than just being there. It helps in letting your child know that you love him.

Affection:
Show your affection by hugging them and kissing them.

Faith and beliefs:
Teach your kids your faith and beliefs. Let them understand what is correct and what is wrong; what is good and what is evil.

Teach them manners. Teach them to respect elders and love their juniors.

Value their opinion:
Ask for their opinion. For example, while shopping, ask them their choice and try to accept it. It will definitely help a child to know you value his or her opinion. If you disagree, then say it is not good for them. Do not try to reason or enter into a debate. Be brief in your explanation.

Have meals together

Never abuse your child

Bed time stories:
The practice of telling or reading a story during bedtime will be remembered by them for a long time.

These are the few suggestions to enhance bonding.

Let your kids feel they are more important to you than anything else. Let your kid know that to the world, he or she may be just one person, but to you they are your world.

10 Most Difficult Questions

Here’s a list of questions that are difficult to answer or probably may have no answers at all.

Questions, questions and more questions.
Everyday you come across many questions. Some of them are easy to answer. But there are certain instances when questions crop up that are difficult to answer. Probably, some of these questions may have no answers at all. You wonder - why this particular thing happens.
Here goes the list -

Why is it that the queue in which you are standing always moves slower than the other queue besides you? You change the queue. Now the queue in which you were standing earlier moves faster. Why?

You are always punctual at your office. You come in time. Your boss is always late. The day you come late, your boss comes early. Why?

Boss accepts gifts from customers and clients. It is complimentary. You accept the same, you are corrupt. Why?

“You are appreciated for your sincerity in work. You are promoted. You get a good raise.” Somebody wakes you up from your slumber. “Oh No!” you say. “That was a dream.” Why?

Why is it the electronic gadget that is beyond your budget is “LATEST” and the one that you can own is “OUTDATED”?

Why is that when you are unwell, your self-medication does not work? But if you go to the doctor, pay his fees, spend on medical tests and take the same medicines you had taken earlier by yourself, you feel better. Why?

Wealth does not bring happiness. Even then, everybody is running after it. Why?

Mom loves you. You love your Mom. Your wife says - “You are Momma's boy.” Why? Your wife loves you. You love your wife. Your mom says - “You are your wife's tail.” Why?

Before marriage, man speaks, wife listen. After marriage, wife speaks, man listen. After children, children speak, parents listen. Later, the whole family speaks (screams) and your entire neighborhood listens. You know all this before marriage about a married life. But you still marry. Why?

When your wife admires another woman's beauty, she is appreciating. You admire another woman; you are infidel, dishonest, mistrustful, etc. etc. Why?

Humor - Quantity Not Sufficient

My personal experience while having treatment for a neck ache that surely turned into a headache.

Many years back, I had some problem with my neck bone. Hence, Dad took me to a bone specialist.

After checking my neck by turning it sideways, upward and downward (and everywhere my neck could move), the doctor advised me to take a sample of early morning urine for testing. “Oh!” thought I, “what the neck bone problem had to do with urine. Strange!” But since it was a doctor's advice, I had to obey.
Next day morning, I took a sample of urine to the pathological laboratory. Like an anxious student, I waited impatiently for the result of the test, which was expected in the evening. On getting the report, I glanced through it. There were some figures and percentages, but I could not make out what they meant.

I took the report to the doctor. “Oh no!” said the doctor. Terrified, I asked him if anything was serious. “No, no” replied the doctor, but continued, “I wanted the Specific Gravity, but the quantity was insufficient.” He showed the “Q.N.S.” typed on the report alongside the column of Specific Gravity explaining that it meant “Quantity Not Sufficient”. “You have to do it again,” said the doctor. “Remember to drink more water before going to bed” he advised.

I did exactly what the doctor had said and went to bed keeping a washed bottle ready for the next day replay.

Next day morning, I took the urine sample (much more in quantity than I had taken the previous day) to the lab. In the evening, I browsed the report. “Oh no, not again” I murmured. The three letters “Q.N.S.” were again there. “How much quantity does it require for getting this “Specific Gravity”, I fumed.

The doctor said “Drink more” as if he was promoting a commercial. “Drink at least three to four glasses of water after dinner and a glass of milk before bed” he further advised. Now the problem of neck ache had turned to headache. A cricket Twenty-Twenty match turned into a Test-match. So I decided that now it will be the last time. If these three letters appear again on the report, then either the doctor will change or there will be no treatment itself.

Before going to bed, I gulped down as much water as I could. A glass of milk was now too heavy for me but I still managed to pass it through my throat down to already filled stomach. I felt myself as a camel that has to store water in his stomach and be ready for a long journey. But my real journey was supposed to end after the results of the report.

Now, there was no bottle left except for a very bigger one - a one-liter soft drink bottle. No other option. I had to use it. I went to bed hoping for "quantity sufficient".

Around midnight, my stomach woke me up. It was very difficult to control. “Oof” I said and rushed to the bathroom. Hurriedly I took the bottle. “Ah, what a relief!” The bottle was completely filled - rather the size of the bottle was insufficient now.

Next morning, Mom woke me up and reminded me to do my routine. I replied it was already done at midnight. “Where is it?” - she asked. I pointed my finger. She doubted and said “So much. You must have surely mixed water.” “No Mom, this is 100%”, I said as I tried to prove its authenticity.

I went to the lab (now third time) with “sufficient” sample and hoped it was really sufficient. I was now a known face at the lab. I told the lady staff my “insufficient quantity problem”. I told her that now I would not pay any fees as I had done the tests earlier twice and the only thing I wanted was the Specific Gravity. Humbly, she agreed. She asked if I had brought a good quantity now. “Yes,” I replied and taking out the bottle from my bag kept it on the table. Eyes wide open she gazed at the bottle, as it was something from the other planet. “Is that urine?” - she asked. I smiled and murmured, “No, a new flavor from the soft drink company!!”

How To Boost Your Computer's Performance

Initially, a brand new machine responds quickly. However, within a short period of time, with regular usage and storage of data, the speed of computer slows down.
Here are few ways to boost your computer's performance.

Free Up Hard Disk Drive By Removing Temporary Files:

Every time a program is started, some temporary files are placed in the folder C:WINDOWSTEMP. However some files stay and multiply due to conflicting programs. These files have to be removed manually.

Junk Data: Computers save listings, temporary internet files and cookies to document their past Internet contacts. Delete this information within the browser program. Not only it clears up hard drive space, but also protects data security, as other people cannot use your Internet security.

Multiple copies of program: Users should check whether there are multiple copies of a same program and delete them.

A Disk Cleanup Utility program of Windows OS identifies and eliminates non-essential files.

Creating Partition

Computers sometimes breakup files and save them in different parts of the hard drive. Over a period of time, as the hard drive gets more and more filled with data, the information gets further scattered across the disk, resulting in fragmentation. It means while accessing a particular file, the computer has to compile the file from all the bits spread across the disk, thus slowing the process.
Partitioning the hard disk is the best solution for minimizing fragmentation. It is recommended to install Operating System and programs in one partition and on the other part of the disk store data created or saved. Thus, the partition of the drive, where you have saved files will be highly fragmented and the other partition where Operating System and other programs are installed will not be affected. Thus your Operating System will continue to run smoothly. In this way, fragmentation of one partition will not affect the performance of another.

Defragmentation

Defragmentation program makes sure the files are saved in one piece, i.e. the data of each file is stored in continuous sectors.
The Utility program - Disk Defragmenter locates and eliminates unnecessary fragments and rearranges files and unused disk space. In this way, it optimizes operations and speeds up the computer. It is recommended to run defragmentation program once a month to improve the performance of your PC.

Digital Camera - What You Should Look For

When buying a Digital Camera, here's what you should look for.

Budget
Your budget to purchase a digital camera should depend on its need. For a holiday photographer, an entry-level model is just fine. They can be from 4-6 megapixel, without any complications, easy to use and that can be easily held. Spending a fortune for a high-end prosumer or digital SLR camera, in such a case, will be waist of money.

Zoom
Digital zoom is just as zooming your picture on a PC. It is just going deeper into a photograph, which leads to pixellations and loss in sharpness.
Go in for an optical zoom. Comparatively, a bit costlier than the digital zoom, it provides a true magnification.
Some digital cameras come with Total Zoom or Combined Zoom that has a combination of both i.e. - digital zoom and optical zoom. Total zoom of a camera is calculated by multiplying optical and digital zoom levels. Read the brochure carefully.

Pixels
Pixels are picture elements that form an image. A high megapixel digital camera is needed only when you have to enlarge a picture. A standard 6 megapixel digital camera is the best option for quality pictures. Even a 4 megapixel camera gives you a good print.

Magnificence
The most common advantage of a digital camera over a film camera is that through LCD, you can preview the photos you took before you print them. A digital camera should have a large LCD preview as well as magnified preview modes.

Sound and Special Modes
A digital camera with a movie mode and built-in microphone is a good option. Digital Cameras come with different special modes to click pictures in various situations.
